At what age
should dog training begin?
We recommend
a puppy kindergarten program during the age range of 8 to 20
weeks.
We do not recommend basic
obedience until a dog is at least 20 weeks old.
We train dogs
up to 10 years of age. However, the best time to instill good manners is
before the dog has learned bad habits
What is the
difference between puppy kindergarten and basic obedience?
Puppy Kindergarten
(PK) is a foundation program. An effective PK program can help
minimize the development and intensity of bad habits. PK gives
you an opportunity to establish a good working rapport with your
puppy in a relaxed environment.
Basic Obedience covers
walking at your side or on a loose leash, sit, stay and down commands, and
coming when called
Do you offer
group lessons?
We offer group lessons both at night and
during the day for those who have time to learn with their dogs.
Which is
more effective - private lessons, group classes or day school?
This question
is best answered after we complete an evaluation session with
you and your dog.
However, in
general terms, private lessons and group classes can be effective if you have the
time, patience and dog knowledge to progress at a reasonable
rate. We recommend that you be able to work with your dog 25
to 30 minutes each day if you choose private or group lessons. You must
also have the patience to work for an extended period of time in a
repetitious manner.
The benefits of day
school still require effort on your part. However, the dog will have
learned the basic skills while at the Dog School and we will teach you how to communicate effectively with the
dog. While you have to practice your new skills, you will see
that the dog can perform basic commands in the presence
of distractions.
